Quotation Analysis 1
“I rolled off the bed and fell to the floor next to the the Philco 20. I yanked the fraying plug out of the wall. I set to work methodically, with my hands trembling, and I removed every glass tube from inside. Whatever happened again to me, I swore was never going to happen again. I was never going back” (136).
The quotation I chose, from London Calling By Edward Bloor, takes place right after the main character, Martin Conway's, second experience time traveling to London, 1940 during World War II. Martin lives in present day New Jersey and goes to All Souls private middle school. He hates his school, is fairly aloof with his friends and family, and mostly stays in his room in the basement of his house. After the death of his grandmother, Martin inherits an antique Philco 20 deluxe radio and his boring state of monotony is flipped upside-down. Matin travels back to 1940's, London and meets Jimmy. Martin gets a new name and a mission, to help Jimmy and his father.
When Martin travels to the bombing blitz of London and watches tragedy and experiences loss, he gets frazzled and quickly wants to end this terrifying adventure. Later he realizes that the world is much bigger than himself but after the bombing accident all Martin wants is for his life to go back to normal. The passage helps you understand the plot of Martin avoiding time travel. Later in the book, Martin goes through more bombing and has a close call. Jimmy is killed by German bombing in his third time traveling experience. However the passage I chose is really a turning point in the book. Martin keeps researching and eventually goes back and fulfills his deal with Jimmy.
The quote above describes Martin's rush to escape tragedy. Most people in the world are trying to do just that, some hanging on to life by mere threads. Nobody likes sadness or grief, yet some people have a lot more than others. This quote makes me think about how lucky I am to live where and when I live. I live in a safe town. Now in time, we have technology that can help save lives. I am very fortunate to live free, safe, and healthy.
